John Bender
John Bender is often the center of attention in the movie The Breakfast Club. He is seen as the criminal amongst the club, often causing havoc. He ticks all the boxes for your stereotypical criminal/bully. Troubled family and upbringing, lower class, rebellious to everything and bullies other students.
By constructing Bender with the Speech, Appearance, Actions and Other method we can truly see how Bender was presented to the audience as a criminal. In the movie, Bender is not dropped off by his parents, he is seen walking in to the school nearly being run over another students car because of his ignorance. In a later scene when everyone is having their lunch, Bender takes a look at everyone else’s lunch before taking Brian’s. These to examples show that Bender is lower class and has a rough relationship with his parents. Bender’s appearance also shows the stereotypical criminal. In the first scene he wears a long coat that looks to be from a thrift store. When he takes this off he is shown wearing a working mans red flannel shirt with a denim vest over the top. He also has a bandana tied to his old and worn looking boots.
John Hughes has used a colloquial style of language for Bender. We see this early in the film when Bender conflicts with Mr Vernon. He remarks “Eat my shorts,” which shows us his childishness along with his attitude. Another example that helps us understand his rough up bringing was when Bender said “You know what I got for Christmas? Oh, it was a banner fucking year at the old Bender family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said, "Hey, smoke up Johnny."
Toward the end of the movie, we see Bender open up about his personal life, we find out that he doesn't be a complete jerk for no reason. We find that he was brought up rough and he learnt to fend for himself. Even though he maybe rude, he always speaks the truth and is extremely honest.
