Brian Johnson
Brian Johnson is the shy/friendly nerd in the group. he is portrayed to be a typical unpopular nerd. He has red hair with braces. Because of his braces, Brian Johnson has a quiet voice with a lisp. His voice is very quick paced. His clothes are very nerdy: Check button shirt, long plain pants. The way he dresses is very formal, too formal for school so this is what sets him out from the rest. He gets intimidated really easily by John Bender and the teacher at the start of the film and is very quiet. He participates in many academic clubs such as the "Physics club". This makes the audience see him as a nerd.
In the Lunch time scene, when every one is unpacking their lunches Brian pulls a big paper bag and unpacks a sandwich, apple juice and soup. This is a "kiddie" lunch which gives the reader the impression that Brian is a small child. Brian's parents put pressure on his academics. They don't let him go out or do anything apart from study. His parents probably have high expectations for him and want him to have a very bright future. He is soft-spoken, hence whenever he talks, he is often cut out by the person he is talking to. Bender, Andrew and even his mum, speak over him during the movie.
Nearing the end of the film, where the group get personal and engage in a down to earth talk, Brian's says, "I see me, but I don't like what I see". This shows viewers how emotionally unstable he, and tells us that he has low self-esteem. Upon getting an 'F' in wood shop he feels he is not good enough and goes tried to pull a gun on himself.
However, Brian is very well mannered and is a goodie-to-shoes. He speaks to Mr Vernon with utmost respect. Bender said he was "every parents wet dream". This shows how much Brian is the model child which parents dream of. In conclusion, the director has portrayed as a soft-spoken goody-to-shoes boy, suffering from low self-esteem.
